BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University golf program swept the monthly Southland Conference awards for September as senior
Zander Gous was named the Men's Golfer of the Month, while freshman
Elodie Chapelet was tabbed as the Women's Golfer of the Month. The awards, which are presented by UniversalCoin.com, were announced Thursday by the conference office.
Gous opened the season by winning medalist honors at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate, the only event the Cardinals competed in during the month. Gous fired a career-best 8-under-par 64 in the first round en route to a 9-under-par 207 for 54 holes, winning the tournament by four strokes. His efforts helped the Cardinals finish third out of 13 teams.
"I'm proud of Z," LU coach
Jessie Mudd said of Gous. "It's good to see him get recognition for his hard work and great play. I know he will keep up both."
Chapelet had an impressive debut for LU, finishing fourth at the Tignanelli Towson Invitational in her first collegiate event with a 36-hole total of 6-over-par 150. She followed that up by tying for first at the Bob Hurley ORU Shootout at 8-ver-par 213 for 54 holes before losing to teammate
Wenny Chang in a playoff.
Chapelet's performances help the Cardinals win the Bob Hurley ORU Shootout and finish third at the Tignanelli Towson Invitational.
"Elodie has gotten her college career off to a great start," LU women's golf coach
Jessica Steward said. "Her competitive experience has certainly helped, and I'm excited to see her improve as the season progresses."
The LU women return to action to action Monday at the Bearkat Women's Invitational hosted by Sam Houston State. The LU men tee it up again Monday at the OGIO Utah Invitational in Salt Lake City.
