LAFAYETTE, La. — Lamar University's men's golf team battled back from 14th place to finish fourth overall after Day 1 of the Louisiana Classics on Monday at Oakbourne Country Club.
The Cardinals posted a two-round total of 563 (291–272), with their 16-under 272 marking the lowest team round of the afternoon session.
LU sits one stroke behind third-place Michigan.
Rory Bennet opened the tournament with a 1-under 71, carding four birdies and 12 pars.
Bennet, along with
Nathan Woodham,
Matthew Bramford and
Filip Widepalm, played the front nine at even par.
LU recorded 16 birdies in the opening round, highlighted by four from Woodham.
Bramford and
David Schneider Jerez added three apiece while Widepalm began his round with six straight pars.
Lamar caught fire in the second round, combining for 25 birdies and two eagles.
Schneider delivered the performance of the day, firing a 9-under 63 — the lowest round by a Cardinal this season — behind eight birdies and an eagle.
He went 7-under on the front nine alone, collecting five birdies and an eagle on the second hole.
Widepalm followed with a 5-under 67, sinking six birdies and playing the front nine at 3-under.
Woodham added a steady 2-under 70, recording three birdies and closing his back nine with seven straight pars.
Bramford contributed an eagle on the third hole and finished with five birdies en route to an even-par 72 to round out the afternoon surge.
No. 29 Texas A&M (278–275—553) holds an eight‑stroke lead over No. 48 Little Rock.
UL Lafayette's Malan Potgieter (65–67—132) leads the individual field by four strokes over East Tennessee State's Oliver Blackadder.
