KINDER, La. - The Lamar women's golf team sits in third plcae following one round of the McNeese State Kosati Pines Collegiate. The Lady Cardinals shot a 320, trailing leader Louisiana-Monroe (308) and Sam Houston State (314),
Cold temperatures and wet grounds hindered the golfers Monday, leading to a frost delay that did not see the players begin their rounds until 9:30 a.m. As a result, darkness caught up with the players before they completed the second round. Play is scheduled to resume at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday with the final 18 holes to follow.
Linda Persson led Lamar with a first round 79 and sits in a tie for ninth place. Lauren Van Gerven and Julie Aime - who joined the team at the start of the spring semester - both turned in an 80 and are tied for 13th.
Stine Pedersen and Ashley Thorpe are tied for 23rd with matching 81s, while Jennel Alexander is tied for 65th after an 89.
Even with the cold and wet grounds, UL-Monroe managed to play the par 72 Koasati Pines course in somewhat of a consistent round and the Lady Hawks took the 18 hole lead with a 308, six shots in front of Sam Houston State.
The individual leader after the opening round was SFA's Wallis Spears who shot a 1-over-par 73.
Weather predictions for Tuesday call for more cold but the course is expected to be a little drier. The tournament will continue to utilize the lift, clean and place rule for the remainder of the event.
