BRYAN, Texas -- The Lamar men's golf team shot a 13-over-par 373 and is in 11th place following the first round of the rain-shortened Aggie Invitational, held at the Traditions Golf Club Saturday.
The Cardinals never seemed to get things going as a team after the 54-hole tournament was altered to a 1 p.m. shotgun start and a 36-hole event due to rains in the Bryan-College Station area on Saturday morning.
Freshman Kevin Hesbois and junior Hugues Joannes both turned in top-15 performances to lead the Cardinals.
Hesbois toured the par 72 layout with precision as he recorded 16 pars, a birdie on the par-4 fourth and an eagle on the 576-yard, par-5 15th - his 17th hole after starting on No. 17 due to the altered shotgun start. He is tied for fifth after recording his second-consecutive 69 in competition. He concluded the Administaff Augusta State Invitational on April 5 with a 69.
Joannes, meanwhile, was more up and down through his round, carding five birdies and three bogeys on the par 72 tract. After birdying Nos. 8 and 11, he lowered his score to 3-under before taking a bogey 5 on No. 14, his final hole of the day. He is tied for 13th entering Sunday.
Freshman Xavier Feyaerts shot a 75 and is tied for 54th. He was six-over through 11 holes before collecting three of his four birdies over the final seven holes.
Senior Justin Harding is tied for 66th after an opening round 77. Senior Leroux Ferriera is tied for 75th after he carded an 82, while redshirt freshman Jake Fuljenz is in 77th after an 84 in his first tourney in more than six weeks.
The Aggie Invitational is a unique event in that each team enters six student-athletes and counts five scores.
Oklahoma State leads the 12-team field with a 19-under-par 341 as it counted four sun-par scores and a level-par scorecard. Texas A&M is second at 346, San Diego State is third at 356, Kent State is fourth at 357 and New Mexico is fifth at 358.
Lamar will be paired with Kansas on Sunday with the six pairings going off No. 10 from 9:31 to 10:06 a.m.
