Lamar men's golfers Kevin Hesbois and Hugues Joannes are in Australia this week competing in the World Amateur Team Championship at The Grange Golf Club and Royal Adelaide Golf Club in Adelaide, Australia.
The duo comprise two-thirds of the team representing their home country - Belgium. Practice rounds ran through Wednesday, with the men's competition beginning Thursday and running through Sunday, culminating with the presentation of the Eisenhower Trophy.
Teams of 2-3 players representing 68 countries are participating in the event, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The event is contested every two years. Joannes competed in the 2006 WATC in South Africa and tied for 51st at 75-70-68-77--290, helping Belgium to a tie for 22nd overall.
Joannes is in his second year at Lamar and has a 72.67 stroke average through two events this year. His 74.63 avg a year ago ranked third on the team. The Brussels native had three top-5 finishes, including a third place showing at the Southland Conference Championship. He was a PING All-America First Team selection as a freshman at Abilene Christian in 2006-07.
Hesbois is a freshman at Lamar and will compete in his first collegiate event in two weeks when the Cardinals travel to Dallas for the Baylor Intercollegiate, held at Royal Oaks Golf Club, Oct. 27-28.
Both players, along with countryman Xavier Feyaerts are the top three ranked amateur players in Belgium. Feyaerts will also compete in the WATC this week.
Former Cardinal Dawie Van Der Walt also competed in the 2004 and 2006 events when he represented South Africa.
