BEAUMONT, Texas — The Lamar University men's golf team is hosting its first tournament since 1999.
LU competes at the Golden Nugget Invitational Monday-Tuesday (March 2-3) in Lake Charles, La.
Each day of competition has an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start.
LAST TIME OUT
The Cardinals competed at the Military City Collegiate in San Antonio, finishing ninth out of 12 teams.
Competing as an individual,
Filip Widepalm tied for 15th after matching his season-low round of 72 in the second round.
David Schneider Jerez recorded his third top 20 finish of the season, tying for 20th with a 54-hole total of 224.
LEADING THE WAY
Schneider continues to set the pace for LU, posting 12 rounds of par or better and carrying a team-best 71.3 stroke average this season.
Nathan Woodham follows closely with a 72.4 stroke average and nine rounds of par or better.
Both Woodham and Schneider have led the Cardinals in spring play, each holding a 72.6 stroke average this semester.
GOLDEN NUGGET INVITATIONAL
LU is making its 11th tournament appearance in Lake Charles since 1992.
The Golden Nugget Invitational was last played in 2018, and the 2019 event was rebranded as the Lake Charles Toyota Invitational.
The Cardinals have enjoyed strong results in Lake Charles, recording seven top five finishes since 1992.
Tournaments then went on a hiatus in Lake Charles as McNeese discontinued its men's and women's golf programs after the 2020-21 season.
The Country Club at The Golden Nugget, a 7,000‑yard, par 72 layout, was ranked the No. 2 course in Louisiana by Golfweek in 2018.
A total of 11 teams will be in the competition, including UTSA, Oakland University, Wichita State, Northern Colorado, UL Monroe, Tarleton State, Abilene Christian, Houston, Troy and South Carolina Upstate.
