Box Score NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Lamar University overcame a 15-point deficit in the second half to take a two-point lead with under a second to go, but would suffer a heartbreaking loss at the buzzer as Stephen F. Austin pulled off the win 58-57 Saturday at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The loss drops LU to third place, one game behind UT Rio Grande Valley in the Southland Conference standings.
Kamryn Wilson led the Cardinals with 14 points.
R'Mani Taylor added 12 points while
Jacei Denley totaled 10 points and recorded four steals.
Chisom Oguego collected 10 rebounds and five steals, which led the Cardinals.
LU (14-8, 11-4 SLC) shot a season-low 29.5 percent from the field (18-of-61), including six from behind the three-point line. Defensively, the Cardinals forced 28 SFA turnovers, recorded 15 steals and capitalized with 24 points.
SFA took an early 6-4 lead before the Cardinals responded with six consecutive points. While the Ladyjacks closed to within 13-10, LU finished on a 5-2 run, ending with a buzzer-beating shot by Taylor to lead 18-12. The Cardinals shot 5-of-15 from the field.
LU led 20-14 early in the second quarter, but the Ladyjacks caught fire. SFA hit 9-of-13 from the field to score 27 points and took a 39-28 lead at halftime. The Cardinals struggled to hit from the field, managing three field goals.
SFA's lead was at 43-28 in the third quarter before the Cardinals began their surge. LU outscored the Ladyjacks 20-8 over the final nine minutes to trail 51-48. Forman and Wilson each tallied eight points as LU converted 7-of-17 shooting while holding the Ladyjacks to 36.4 percent.
Both teams were silent in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter before the Ladyjacks scored first. Down 55-49, the Cardinals got a jumper from Denley. Then, they gave the ball to
Taliah Hill, who put LU back in front, 56-55, with two minutes to go. The Cardinals' defense kept SFA off the scoreboard and got the ball back with one second to go.
Denley was fouled and hit a free throw to make it 57-55 with 0.6 seconds left. SFA was able to get the ball inbounds and pull off a three-pointer just before the horn sounded.
The Cardinals will continue their road trip by heading down to Edinburg to take on UT Rio Grande Valley Thursday. The ball will tip off at 6:30 p.m. and be streamed on ESPN+.
