BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University has concluded its five regular season indoor track and field meet schedule and is now getting set to compete in the Southland Conference Indoor Championships. The meet will start Wednesday and will take place at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Ala.
In their last meet, the Cardinals sent a split squad to Houston for the Howie Ryan Invitational and Boston University for the David Hemery Invitational. In Houston,
Kyndall Drones broke two school records in the weight throw (17.94m/58-10.25) and shot put (14.51m/47-07.25) to place fourth and fifth, respectively. LU had five third place finishes from
Kayla Smith in the 400-meters (56.28),
Krystan Bright in the 60m-hurdles (8.46),
Ke'Asia Hall in the triple jump (11.98m/39-03.75),
Alex Williams III in the weight throw (18.2m/59-11.25) and the men's 4x400-relay team (3:16.70), which included
Ethan Ellis, who also placed second in the men's 400m dash (48.56). Bright and Smith would also team up in the women's 4x400m relay and claimed second at 3:51.06.
Meanwhile, in Boston,
Ashton Rainey was 40th and broke the school's 5,000m mark with a time of 16:17.81. This would be 10 seconds faster than the previous mark held by
Nia Clatworthy (16:27.81).
Luke Parker placed 20th in the men's 800m run with a personal best of 1:51.81, which was .27 seconds off the school record held by Joe Wade.
In last season's indoor meet, LU's women's team took second place with 115 points while the men were fifth with 61. The Cardinals earned 13 medals (nine gold, one silver, three bronze), including conference titles from Rainey (3,000m),
Mariam Buenanueva Saleme (pentathlon), and
Kenson Tate, who became the first LU athlete to three-peat in the men's long jump.
The meet will open Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. with the men's heptathlon. The running events will commence at noon, while the field events start at 1 p.m.
