HOUSTON, Texas – Lamar University sophomore
Kyndall Drones broke the school's outdoor hammer throw record as the Cardinals totaled 11 top-10 finishes to open the Tom Tellez Invitational Friday.
Drones established the record of 52.83m (173-04) on her sixth and final throw of the event to take home fourth place, only trailing third by four inches. The previous record was set by
Glennis Woolridge (166-7) back in 2023.
LU had four athletes place in the top-10 of the men's hammer throw as
Anthony Oliver recorded a third-place toss of 58.63m (192-04), which edged out teammate
Alex Williams III (58-02m/190-04) by two feet.
On the track circuit,
Kenson Tate (5th; 10.56) and
Bethany Kelly (8th; 12.15) ran in the 100-meter preliminaries and advanced to the finals. Also qualifying for the finals in her event was
Aryssa Rodriguez, who needed a time of 14.54 in the 100-meter hurdles to place seventh.
The Tom Tellez Invitational will resume Saturday as the women's shot put will open at 11:30 a.m. while the track portion resumes an hour after.
Meanwhile, out in Azusa, Calif. for the Bryan Clay Invitational, sophomore
Luke Parker set a new personal best in the men's 800m with his time of 1:50.16 and rounded out the top 15.
Hannah Roberts (7:00 p.m. CT) and
Jonathan Rivera (12:36 a.m. CT) will each compete Saturday evening in the 1,500m to close out their time in Azusa.
