FRISCO, Texas – Lamar University senior Mariam Buenanueva Saleme has been named the Southland Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week after her record-breaking performance in the heptathlon at the Texas A&M 44 Farms Invitational. This is the second consecutive week LU has received this honor after Anthony Oliver achieved the award last week.
Buenanueva Saleme (Buenos Aires, Argentina) broke the school heptathlon record with a score of 5,596 points finishing third overall. She recorded four top-five finishes and was in the top 10 in all but one of the seven events. She also set personal bests in the 800 meters (2:17.27; 3rd), javelin throw (36.81m/120-9; 8th), long jump (5.92m/19-5.25; 4th) and 200m (24.72; 5th).
Buenanueva Saleme's total ranks as the 11th-highest in all of NCAA Division I, third in the NCAA South Central Region and first in the SLC. In addition, she ranks in the region's top 50 in the long jump (24th) and the javelin (50th).
This week, the Cardinals are sending a split squad to compete in the Bryan Clay Invitational (Azusa, Calif. (4/16-4/17) and the Tom Tellez Invitational (Houston, Texas (4/17-4/18).
