LU men's golf begins spring season at Border Olympics

BEAUMONT, Texas — The Lamar University men's golf team travels to Laredo to begin the spring season at the Border Olympics Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 16-17.

First and second round action begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

FALL HIGHLIGHTS

LU wrapped up the fall season on Oct. 14 at the Everett Buick GMC Classic.

David Schneider Jerez posted a team-best stroke average of 70.6 in 12 rounds of competition.

He had 10 rounds of par or better while recording one top 10 finish. Schneider's best finish of tying for sixth came at the Sandestin Collegiate Classic on Sept. 25.

Schneider posted the best 54-hole score at the competition of 206 while he also recorded the lowest round score of 67 at the very same tourney. 

Nathan Woodham and Matthew Bramford rank second and third on the team with the averages of 72.3 and 72.6, respectively.

Woodham and Bramford each posted six rounds of par or better.

LU's best finish came at the Bayou City Collegiate on Sept. 30 when it placed fourth overall out of 14 teams.

SPRING SCHEDULE

After the trip to Laredo, the Cardinals are competing in the Military City Collegiate at TPC San Antonio from Feb. 23-24.

LU then hosts the Golden Nugget Invitational at The Country Club at The Golden Nugget in Lake Charles, La. from March 2-3.

The Cardinals will then compete in the Louisiana Classics in Lafayette, La. March 9-10 before returning closer to home for the All-American Intercollegiate at the Golf Club of Houston March 16-17.

Before the Southland Conference tournament in Kerrville, LU competes at the Tiger Invitational in Columbia, Mo. April 6-7.

BORDER OLYMPICS

The Cardinals are competing in the Border Olympics for the 10th straight season since 2017.

LU's best finish at the tournament came in 2022 when it placed third overall.

This spring's competition consists of 13 teams which includes Illinois State, UT Rio Grande Valley, Tarleton State, Sam Houston, Wright State, Houston Christian, UL Lafayette, Troy, Houston, New Mexico State, Wichita State and North Texas.

The Border Olympics, hosted by the University of Houston, is in its 74th year of existence.

Laredo Country Club, a par 72 course that measures at 7,125 yards, has hosted the tournament nine out of the last 10 seasons with the exception of 2022.
