HOUSTON, Texas - Junior Neelie Schiel earned Lamar University's third gold medal on the second day of the Southland Conference Outdoor Championship meet at Rice's Holloway Field Friday. After two days, the men are currently tied for third with 33 points along with Southeastern Louisiana while trailing Stephen F. Austin (58) and UIW (47). Meanwhile, the women sit in second place with 47 points, only behind Northwestern State (72.5).

Schiel and teammate Cecile Bogliolo captured first and second place, respectively, in the women's javelin throw by being the only athletes to eclipse 150 feet. It was on Schiel's third throw that she set the school record at 46.95m (154-11) to claim the title. This was her third victory in the event this season and her second conference title at any NCAA level. Bogliolo's mark of 46.30m (151-11), which she achieved on her first throw, is currently the second-best in school history.

Mariam Buenanueva Saleme finished the heptathlon with a bronze medal, scoring 5,257 points. With her best finish being third in the javelin (34.30m; 112-6), she was 23 points behind Basia Mitchell (SFA) for second and 157 points behind overall winner Raven-Symone Jarrett of Northwestern State. Later, Buenanueva Saleme qualified for the finals of the women's 100-meter hurdles (14.23) along with teammate Kayli Johnson (13.55), who posted the fastest time in the prelims.

Johnson earned a silver in the women's long jump as she posted a season-best 6.22m (20-5). This was her third medal in her outdoor track and field career. On the men's circuit, Kenson Tate's bid for a fifth career conference title in the long jump was not to be as the redshirt junior from Zachary, La., placed fifth at 7.47m (24-6.25). Yet, he qualified for the finals of the 100m hurdles with his time of 10.52.

Other athletes who qualified for the finals are Cameron Chin (2nd; 46.76) in the 400m, Ahmasia Brown (8th; 11.94) in the women's 100m, Annabel Hobday (8th; 2:14.74), Emma Powell (4th; 2:12), and Luke Parker (2nd; 1:52.31) in the 800m.
