Big Red Taking on Red-Hot Demons Thursday Night

BEAUMONT, Texas – With seven games to go in the regular season, Lamar University (15-7, 10-3 SLC) has a half-game lead over Stephen F. Austin for second place in the Southland Conference standings after a heartbreaking loss at home to UT Rio Grande Valley. The Cardinals will look to get back in the win column Thursday as they hit the road against Northwestern State (12-10, 9-4 SLC). The game will start at 6:30 p.m. from Prather Coliseum and will be streamed on ESPN+.

The Cardinals' 16-game home SLC winning streak ended Saturday when UTRGV hit a game-winning three-pointer to win, 58-56. Sabria Dean led the Cardinals with 23 points while R'Mani Taylor added 12 points and dished out four assists. Before Saturday, the last home defeat for LU was against East Texas A&M on Jan. 18th, 2024.
 
Milestone Watch - Akasha Davis
Davis needs 10 rebounds to become the second Cardinal with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career. The other Cardinal to achieve this feat was Carolyn Ford, who ended her career with 1,056 points and 1,052 rebounds.
 
LU's Dean for the College of Basketball
Saturday marked the 130th consecutive appearance in the starting lineup for Sabria Dean. Her first appearance was back on Jan. 6th, 2021 against Nicholls. She also needs 44 points to pass Cardinals Hall of Honor selection Uirannah Jackson for second all-time in scoring in program history.
 
Last Time vs. NSU
The Cardinals won their ninth conference game against the Demons as they overcame a 15-point deficit to win 59-55 at the Neches Federal Credit Union Arena at the Montagne Center. Davis led the Cardinals with 21 points and 18 rebounds, while Dean (13) and Jacei Denley (10) combined for 23 points.
 
The Demons Right Now
Since losing to LU, Northwestern State has won its last four games, including an 80-56 thrashing of McNeese. In conference games, the Demons have the third best defense, allowing 56.2 points per game while they are fourth in scoring with an average of 62.8 ppg on offense. Reigning SLC Player of the Week Mya Blake leads everyone in the conference in scoring with 17.2 ppg, which included a 25-point outing against the Cardinals in the last meeting between the two teams.
 
Up Next
LU hits the road to Commerce for a showdown with East Texas A&M Saturday. The ball will be tipped off at noon. The Cardinals defeated ETAMU earlier this season in Beaumont, 83-65.
