HOUSTON, Texas -
Annabel Hobday,
Kayli Johnson, and
Freddy Richardson each took home first place for Lamar University on the second and final day at the University of Houston's Robert Platt Invitational Saturday. These three firsts were part of 11 top-three finishes the Cardinals recorded overall.
After winning the triple jump on Friday, Johnson earned her second title in the long jump by leaping 5.77m (18'11.25"). Earlier in the day, her time of 8.54 qualified her for the finals of the 60-meter hurdles. There, she claimed third after crossing the line at 8.45.
In the women's mile, Hobday (4:49.65) edged out teammate
Cara Inch (4:50.65) to claim first overall. Inch would add another second-place finish in the 3,000m, clocking in at 9:42.99. Richardson won the men's mile as he crossed the line at 4:03.55, defeating SFA's Elkana Kipruto by a little over half a second.
Kenson Tate placed second in the men's long jump with a distance of 7.64m (25'0.75"). This made him the highest collegiate athlete as first place was unaffiliated.
Mariam Buenanueva Saleme finished the pentathlon in second with 3,661 points as she added a first finish in the long jump (5.69m-18'8") and eighth in the 800m (2:30.79). She placed second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.77), fourth in the shot put (10.68m-35'03"), and seventh in the high jump (1.56m-5'11") Friday.
The other three finishers all claimed third in their events, including
Elijah Jackson in the high jump (2.10m-6'10.75"),
Luke Parker in the men's 800m (1:52.37), and the women's 4x400m "A" team of
Kayla Smith,
Hannah Roberts,
Mikalette Thompson and
Chantell Bowman, who timed in at 3:52.29.
The Cardinals will return to action on Feb.14th with their third and final indoor trip to Houston to compete in the Howie Ryan Invitational.
