SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Overcoming a challenging opening round, the Lamar University women's golf team made 10 birdies in the second round to climb up to seventh place after Day 1 of the Terrier Intercollegiate Monday at the Country Club of Spartanburg.
LU shot the total score of 626 (318-308) to sit six strokes behind sixth place Western Carolina.
Brooke Frerichs and
Amanda Davidsson made two birdies each in the opening round.
Frerichs closed out the round making five straight pars after she started the day with back-to-back birdies on the first and second hole.
The tide turned in the second round for the Cardinals.
Aaniyah Bhola shot one under (71) during the second round. She shot one under on the front nine with two birdies while she closed things out at even par with two birdies on the back nine.
Frerichs had a bogey-free front nine with four birdies and five pars, shooting four under to start the round.
Frerichs is currently tied for seventh place while Bhola is inside the top 20, tied for 18th.
The Cardinals had eight birdies during the front nine. LU had 15 birdies made for the day.
East Tennessee State leads the tournament with a six-stroke lead over tourney host Wofford.
Sophia Gambini of East Tennessee State has a one-shot lead over teammate Arisa Piyamanit atop the individual leaderboard.
