Men's Golf Outside Top 10 After First Round of GMAC Invitational

ONEONTA, Ala. - The Lamar University men's golf team started its appearance at the GMAC Invitational firing 294. In 11th place right now, the Cardinals trail USC-Upstate by one for a top 10 spot.

Paired up with Troy and Jacksonville State to open the round, the Cardinals had one golfer break even in David Schneider Jerez. The Spaniard began his tournament with back-to-back birdies on the first two holes. Adding three more birdies to finish with five, he is one of seven golfers tied for 25th with a one-under 71. Making his first tournament appearance as a Cardinal, Filip Widepalm birdied four times and carded in 73 to be tied for 40th. Also with four birdies was Matthew Bramford, tied for 46th after shooting 74 on the first 18 holes.

Nathan Woodham sits tied for 58th after a round of 76 while Rory Bennet, who had three front-nine birdies, trails him by one and is tied for 65th. Competing as an individual, Fermin Martinez is tied for 51st with 75, which included a pair of back-nine birdies.

North Alabama (275) leads Troy by four through the first round while Yixiang Wang of Memphis sits atop the leaderboard with 67.

Monday's second round will have the Cardinals tee off at 8:45 a.m., along with USC Upstate and Evansville.
