Davis Repeats as Southland Student-Athlete of the Year

FRISCO, Texas - For the second straight season, Lamar University women's basketball player Akasha Davis was tabbed Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year and a first teamer by the conference as part of the 2023-24 Women's Basketball All-Academic teams. Davis becomes the first player to receiver this honor in back-to-back years since Cassidy Barrios (Nicholls) achieved this feat between the 2017-18 and 2018-19 campaigns.

Academic All-Southland Conference, each nominee must have, a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) through the semester prior to the sports' championship, completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution prior to the season in which the nomination occurs and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games during the most recently completed season.

To qualify as a nominee for Student Athlete of the Year, each nominee must have earned at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale at the nominating institution and have demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years of athletics competition, including the current season, at the nominating institution.

Achieving a 3.67 in Public Health, Davis was the catalyst for a Cardinals' team that went 24-7 including capturing their first regular season conference title since 2018-19 with a 17-1 conference record. She averaged double-figures with 15.5 points and 10.9 rebounds per game in all 31 starts, which included 18 double-doubles.

Earning four SLC Player of the Week honors, Davis was recognized as an all-conference first-teamer and was recognized by Dave Campbell's Texas, who placed her first team. This marks the second academic award Davis achieved for her play as she was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.
