BEAUMONT, Texas - With the first half of Southland Conference play done, Lamar University women's basketball team trails Southeastern Louisiana by just a half-game for first place. But the second half will see them start on the road for three of the next four contests beginning with a Thursday night meeting in San Antonio against UIW.
STREAK JINXES
For the second game in a row, Lamar defeated a team that was in the midst of a winning streak of five or more games. They snapped Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's five-game winning streak with a 63-57 win on Saturday. Previously, they ended SLU's seven-game winning streak.
BROOKLYN BRIDGE AIN'T FALLING DOWN
Brooklyn Mitchell set a new career-high with 14 points, which included three second-half threes including two down the stretch. It also marked the second straight double-digit game for Mitchell after she scored 10 against SLU.
DOUBLE PLAY? THIS ISN'T BASEBALL KASH
Akasha Davis recorded her seventh straight double-double game with 11 points and 11 rebounds against the Islanders. Her previous mark was four in a row, which happened in the last four games of the 22-23 season. Davis remains the conference's leader in scoring (15.8 ppg) and rebounder (10.5 rpg) while her 11 double-doubles are good for a tie for 21st in the nation.
LAST TIME VS THE UIW CARDINALS
LU needed a dominant 22-3 fourth quarter to bury UIW 70-53. Sabria Dean led LU with 29 points on 12-of-19 shooting while Akasha Davis tallied 20 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. Winners of their last five against UIW, LU holds a 15-2 head-to-head record. Last year in San Antonio, the Cardinals came away with a 74-67 win with Davis putting up 23 points and 12 rebounds.
SINCE WE LAST MET
UIW is now 12-8 overall and 5-4 in conference play, which puts them in fourth currently. After a heroic effort against SLU in triple overtime despite the loss, UIW bounced back with a 64-54 win in New Orleans. Destiny Terrell (17 points) and Aaliyah Collins (14 points) were the lone double-digit point scorers.
NINA AND AALIYAH'S HEROIC EFFORT
In the triple overtime loss to SLU, Nina De Leon Negron and Aaliyah Collins each posted a team-high 22 points against the Lions. The two would combine for 35 points in regulation and nine in overtime before fouling out of the game. Down by four in regulation, Leon Negron connected on a three before Collins gave UIW the lead. Collins leads UIW in scoring with 12.9 while Leon Negron has a second-leading 10.5 this season.
UP NEXT FOR LU
The Cardinals' lone home game of this four-game stretch happens this Saturday as they will take on Nicholls at 3:00 PM this Saturday.
