Cardinals Seeking Big Easy Result Against Privateers

| By:

BEAUMONT, Texas - After escaping Hammond with a victory over Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday night, Lamar University's women's basketball team has won their last seven straight games and is currently in first place of the Southland Conference standings. Now, they will head down to New Orleans to meet the Privateers looking to avenge last season's loss on the road with the tipoff taking place at 2:00 pm.

MOVE OVER SOUTHEASTERN, I'M DRIVING
Lamar secured a 67-60 victory over Southeastern despite having the Lions comeback from 22 down to five in the fourth quarter. The win puts LU in first place of the Southland Conference at 11-1 overall to go along with a 17-5 record.

ANOTHER UNDER-10
For the 15th quarter this season, the Cardinals have allowed fewer than double-figures as they conceded just six to the Lions in the second quarter. The Cardinals are 12-1 in games which they allowed nine or less this season.

IRONWOMAN SABRIA DEAN GOING 100 STRAIGHT STARTS
Sabria Dean will be expected to make her 100th consecutive start in Lamar program history tomorrow. Already a member of the 1000-point club, Dean made her first start on January 6th, 2021 against Nicholls. That game saw her finish with 11 points as LU won 66-40. This season, Dean is averaging 14.6 ppg and 5.5 rpg.

NEW ORLEANS WOMAN
Brookyln Mitchell returns home to New Orleans after posting six points on a pair of threes. One of those threes came in the fourth, which stopped a 12-0 run for SLU. At Ursuline Academy in New Orleans, she led her squad to a state championship and earned all-district and all-metro honors while averaging 15.7 ppg, 6.0 rpg, and 4.0 apg.

LAST TIME VS THE PRIVATEERS
The Cardinals rallied from five points down with three minutes to go to beat UNO 65-62. Sabria Dean posted 20 points while Akasha Davis recorded 19 points and 16 rebounds. R'Mani Taylor proved to be the hero with a game-winning lay-up with 1:12 to go. The Cardinals are 24-19 all-time against the Privateers. However, their last meeting against UNO resulted in LU scoring just five first quarter points and dropping a 60-46 game. New Orleans has proven to be a toss-up location for LU historically as it's been friendly to them for 10 wins while it hasn't been kind to the Cardinals for nine losses.

SINCE WE LAST MET
The Privateers are 10-14 overall and 7-6 in the conference following an 80-78 victory over Nicholls. Alexis Calderon and Nora Francois each led with 20 points apiece while Jayla Kimbrough tallied 15 points including the game-winning three-pointer.

A PRYOR REIGN
DeArica Pryor is the reigning Southland Conference player of the week after putting up 54 points (27.0 ppg) in the two road contests by UNO last week. Pryor had set a season-high 32 points against Texas A&M-Commerce last Saturday. Against Nicholls, she finished with 14 points.

UP NEXT FOR LU
Big Red returns home next Thursday night to meet McNeese for the second game this season. The tip-off starts at 7:00 PM.
