Keyonia McDaniel and Niyah Waters Sign With Lamar University

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas—The Lamar University women's basketball team is two games into the 2024-25 season, but head coach Aqua Franklin continues to look for players to contribute for future seasons. On National Signing Day, the Cardinals signed two newcomers in Keyonia McDaniel and Niyah Waters.

Keyonia McDaniel - G - Kountz, Texas (Kountze HS)

McDaniel joins the Cardinals after spending her high school career with the Kountze Lions. Last season, she averaged 26 points, six rebounds, 4.5 steals, 2.5 assists, and one block per game. She also was a two-time district MVP, all-regional, two-time Golden Triangle team member and finished her career with over 2,000 points. McDaniel also spent time in the AAU with the Cy-Fair Elite.

"From nearby Kountze, this athlete brings the Southeast Texas toughness and mixes it with a relentless pursuit to get better each day.  Her ability to shoot the ball from deep and willingness to sacrifice her body for her team separates her as a player and is also what makes her a great fit for our program. We believe that her contagious spirit of competition can help us continue to have championship DNA."

Niyah Waters - G - Pflugerville, Texas (Hendrickson HS)

Over the last three seasons at Hendrickson High School, Waters has helped led the Hawks to three district championships, including an undefeated 14-0 district campaign last season. She received All-Central Texas, all-state, and all-region honors while named district MVP and a member of the all-tournament team during a regional tournament appearance. Waters also spent time in AAU with the Cy Fair Elite.

"We are overjoyed to sign Niyah, a very versatile athlete whose combination of skill and I.Q can help her make an impact from day one. Her character off the floor and great personality make her the perfect fit for us as we continue to build our championship culture."
- Aqua Franklin
