BEAUMONT, Texas - With their five-game winning streak snapped and on the heels of their first home and Southland Conference loss of the season, Lamar University's women's basketball team will seek to bounce back as they travel down I-10 to take on Houston Christian. The tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
WE DON'T ALWAYS WIN AT HOME SADLY
The Cardinals suffered their first home loss of the season falling 73-70 to Texas A&M-Commerce. The loss also ended LU's five-game winning streak and ended their undefeated run in Southland Conference play. Despite the loss, Akasha Davis racked up her seventh double-double of the season with 21 points and 18 rebounds.Â
H-TOWN MADE
R'Mani Taylor makes a return trip to her hometown of Houston. While at Shadow Creek High School, located in Pearland, a suburb of Houston, she was the school's all-time leading scorer, a two-time district 23-6A MVP, TABC All-Region Player of the Year and led the Lady Sharks to a district title. To this point, Taylor is third on the team scoring 6.7 per game and had eight assists in the game against Commerce.Â
LAST SEASON'S THRILLING WIN
The Cardinals used a buzzer-beater win against the Huskies down in Houston. With the score tied at 53 and two seconds left, Sabria Dean got the inbounds pass and made the winning shot just as the buzzer sounded. She finished the game with 11 points. Â
HISTORY VS THE HUSKIES
Heading into their 23rd meeting all-time, the Cardinals possess a 19-3 record against HCU. This includes a stretch of 12 wins in the last 13 games with the one loss being on Feb. 15th, 2020 in Houston. Last season, the Cardinals took care of the Huskies in both meetings.Â
MEET THE HUSKIES
Losers of five straight games, the Huskies are coming off a 57-48 loss to New Orleans. Enya Maguire (13 points) and Yasmin Butler (10 points) were the only double-digit scorers for the Huskies in the game. HCU currently averages 55.3 ppg while also allowing 64.9 ppg. Â
N'DENASIJA COLLINS
Having recently eclipsed the 200-point mark on the season, Collins is currently leading the Huskies in scoring with 13.3 ppg. Prior to the New Orleans game, she had a stretched where she scored double-figures in nine of 10 games including 23 against Nicholls.Â
NORTHERN IRELAND'S GOOD LUCK CHARMS
The Maguire Sisters of Enya and Erin, residents of Belfast, Northern Ireland, have contributed positive numbers to the Huskies this season. Enya leads the team with 28 three-pointers, which also included five against Sam Houston to finish with a season high 23 points. Erin is third on the defensive in steals with 15 while she's also tied for fourth in assists with 24.Â
