WACO, Texas – The Lamar University women's tennis team picked up more wins on the second day of the HEB Invitational hosted by Baylor University Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals squared off against Denver in singles play, and Nebraska and SMU in doubles.
Senior
Elena Rubio recorded the Cards' singles victory in a match against Denver, and then return to the court in doubles competition with teammate
Megan Do to post the doubles win. The Cardinals finished the day with a 2-6 overall record.
Rubio opened the day with a hard-fought match that nearly went the distance with Denver's Louise Wikander. After picking up a 6-3 victory in the opening set, Rubio was pushed to a tiebreak in the second but LU's senior prevailed with a 7-6 (7-4) decision.
Rubio then joined teammate
Megan Do to take on SMU's Reka Pate and Millie Skelton. The Cardinals' duo cruised to a 6-3 decision.
Big Red returns to action Sunday at 9 a.m. to close out the HEB Invitational.
