| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University's women's tennis team got out to a strong on the second day of the Joe Pyburn Memorial Invitational posting a 3-0 opening round record in doubles competition Saturday.

The duo Luana Paiva and Arina Gudovskaya faced a tough battle in their opening match of the day. The match against LSU-Alexandria's top tandem of Isabella Stuurman and Ekaterina Orlova went to a tiebreak. Once the match went to the extra frame, Lamar took control winning the match, 7-6 (7-1). Unfortunately, Lamar's path to the Flight A championship was halted by Southeastern Louisiana's Aitana Darder and Taisia Bolsova in the semifinals.

It was a similar result for junior Savannah Bijlsma and sophomore Asta Miettinen in Flight B. They defeated LSU-A's Joline Roesch and Esthella Valentina Gonzalez, 6-2. Similar to Flight A, Bijlsma and Miettinen's path to a flight championship was halted in the semifinals.

Lamar also picked up a doubles victory in Flight C where junior Martina Alcaino and freshman Varvara Popadina defeated Southeastern's Mariam Makashvili and Panatchakorn. The Cardinals took the Flight C contest in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.

Lamar will be back on the court Sunday for the final day of action. The championship round of matches will begin at 9 a.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
