BEAUMONT, Texas – Junior Martina Alcaino opened the 2025 Joe Pyburn Memorial Invitational – Lamar's annual home fall tournament – with a win Friday afternoon at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
Alcaino was dominant in her match against Southland Conference opponent, Mariam Makashvili (Southeastern Louisiana). Alcaino recorded a hard-fought 6-3, decision in the first set and didn't look back as she recorded a 6-1 victory in the second. Alcaino will face the winner of the Mio Kozaki (Louisiana Tech) and Esthella Valentina Gonzalez (LSU-Alexandria) match which was not finished at press time.
Unfortunately, Alcaino was the lone victory for the Red and White Friday.
The second day of action is set to get under way Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with the start of doubles competition. The second round of singles is scheduled for approximately at 1 p.m.
