FRISCO, Texas - The Southland Conference unveiled the 2023 softball all-academic awards from the 2023 season. One member of Lamar University's softball team was selected as part of the first team and that was
Sam Bean.
The All-Academic teams are voted on by head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance staff members from each Southland Conference institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to qualify for All-Academic selection, and have competed in at least 50 percent of their team's contests on the season, excluding pitchers.
Bean possessed a 4.0 GPA while majoring in Exercise Science this past year. Starting in all 56 games, Bean batted .309 and was tied for the first on the team with 50 hits and six homers. Leading Big Red with 33 runs scored and 28 walks, she also contributed 21 RBI, 13 doubles, and one triple while stealing five bases on six attempts. Among her memorable performances this season was a perfect four-of-four with three doubles and three RBI against Rider (3/3/23).
The 2023 Cardinals' squad would win 22 games and pick up two dramatic wins against Northwestern State and Nicholls to reach the SLC Softball Tournament semifinals.
