LU Closes Southland Tournament in Sixth

| By:
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Lamar University's women's golf team finished the Southland Conference tournament shooting 321 strokes, which was better than the totals from the first two rounds. With a total of 969 strokes (324-324-321), LU finishes sixth place overall in the tournament finishing 29 strokes better than Bryant University.

For head coach Janell O'Connor, the tournament finish was a far cry from LU's solid season to this point. "We were trending in the right direction leading into conference," said head coach O'Connor. "So this is a disappointing way to end the semester. This golf course didn't suit our eye or our game and we couldn't overcome that and didn't get the job done."

Four of the five golfers were able to finish their rounds as Grace Connelly, who posted 164 strokes (80-84) in the first two rounds, was unable to complete the final round meaning she ends her tournament in 35th place. Alessia Trebbi Tindall was LU's top golfer as she recorded her second 78 of the round with three birdies to finish tied for 12th with 235 strokes (78-79-78). Karolina Krasova, Linnea Jerlebo, and Madi Smith all had 81's in the third round. Krasova took 21st with 241 strokes (83-77-81) while Jerlebo posted 248 strokes (83-84-81), which got her 24th. In her final collegiate tournament, Smith went out with 250 strokes (84-85-81) a tie for 26th.

"I'm thankful to Madi and everything she has meant to the program and her team," Coach O'Connor remarked. "I wish her so much success in her future."

This season, LU finished in the top 10 in all but two of their tournaments. This included a tournament victory and an individual champion as well. The future, according to Coach O'Connor, could not be any more brighter.

"Im excited about the future of Cardinal golf as well," she said. "We had a few things this week that we really can learn from and hopefully come back stronger in the fall.  We have 6 returners who can step up and play so it'll be exciting things to come."

In the end, Augusta College won the team championship for the second straight season while Incarnate Word's Alex Giles was the individual champion.
