Tough Start Has Cardinals in Fifth at Southland Tourney

| By:
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Lamar University's women's golf team opened their Southland Conference Tournament at the Hill Country Resort Golf Club in San Antonio on Monday along with six other programs. But the first round proved to be a tough struggle as through the first 18 holes, the Cardinals are currently fifth place after shooting 324 strokes. They're ahead of Texas A&M-Commerce by a stroke and six behind Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by six strokes for fourth.

Alessia Trebbi Tindall sits in 10th place after recording a 78 to open her tournament despite making three birdies on the day. Two strokes and six spots behind Trebbi Tindall is fellow England resident Grace Connelly, whose lone birdie came on the fifth hole. Linnea Jerelbo and Karolina Krasova each recorded 83's to be tied for 23rd while Madi Smith is tied for 27th with 84.

"Today was a rough day," said head coach Janell O'Connor. "We didn't hit it well off the tee and it penalized us. We did some good work after the round and are ready for tomorrow. We have seen the weather forecast and are ready for any challenge that comes."

Having four golfers in the top 10, Houston Christian leads by six strokes over the University of Incarnate Word, who has the current leader in the clubhouse in Alex Giles following a 71 round. The second round will commence tomorrow.
