FRISCO, Texas – Lamar University junior
Ana Jolic has been named Southland Conference Player of the Week announced league officials Tuesday morning. It marks the second time this season a Cardinal has received the honor, and the first time Jolic has been recognized.
A native of Kikinda, Serbia, Jolic was key in helping the Cardinals win both of their matches last week – against Southern Mississippi and Stephen F. Austin. In both matches, the Cardinals had to rally from an early deficit beating Southern Miss, 4-2, and SFA by a 4-3 tally.
Jolic won both her matches at No. 3 singles and went 0-1 in doubles competition during the week, but the lone setback came down to a tiebreaker. Jolic, and her doubles partner
Noelia Lorca, were up in their doubles match against the Golden Eagles before the match was halted due to the doubles point being awarded.
Against, Southern Miss, Jolic won the deciding match to give the Cardinals the victory. She downed Southern Miss' Maddison Ricardo, 6-2, 6-4, in straight sets for the victory. She came right back on Friday and got the Cards on the scoreboard with a 7-5, 6-4, victory over SFA's Jemma Cave. Jolic's victory against SFA started a four-match rally that the Ladyjacks couldn't answer.
Jolic has won three straight singles matches to pace a Cardinals' team that has caught fire. LU has won four of its last five matches and sits at 5-5 on the season. The Cardinals return to action Saturday when they host Dillard (La.) University from the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center. The match is slated for an 11 a.m. start.
