Asta Miettinen came out swinging Friday leading a Lamar University squad that picked up four singles wins and a doubles victory. Miettinen picked up two wins on the day.
The duo of returning veterans Miettinen and
Arina Gudovskaya got the Cardinals out to a strong start with their impressive 6-2 decision over A&M-Kingsville's Maya Donkor and Lilly-Isabelle Muraske. Miettinen continued her strong play in singles competition. After taking a thrilling 7-6 (9-7) victory over UTSA's Laia Tarazona Peyro in her opening set, Miettinen never looked back. She ran away with the second set posting a 6-3 decision to clinch the match.
Sophomore
Luana Paiva followed suit with a straight-sets decision over UIW's Amelie Montalvo, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). Junior
Martina Alcaino recorded a similar victory in the Orange Bracket. Alcaino dispensed of A&M-Kingsville' Andrea Landaeta, 7-5, 6-4. Junior
Savannah Bijlsma closed out the day for the Cards with the team's most dominant performance. She ousted Emma Halvarsson, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the semifinals.
Lamar will be back on the court Saturday at 9 a.m.
