BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University's women's basketball team pretty much has their Southland Conference tournament fate sealed as far as where they will end up in the seedings. But before they can focus on making a big postseason run, they first will close out the regular season with one final conference showdown against Nicholls State. With nothing to play for other than a chance at redemption following an early loss to the Colonels, the Cardinals will travel to Thibodaux for a 5:00 p.m., tip-off on Wednesday.
LOCKED IN
With Lamar's loss to New Orleans on Saturday, this has all but guaranteed them to finish in third place of the Southland Conference tournament, which means they will be guaranteed at least one bye. While fourth place Texas A&M-Commerce trails LU by a game, the Cardinals would have the tiebreaker if both teams finish with the same record thanks in part to LU's winning percentage against common opponents.
CAN WE START THE COUNTDOWN
Sabria Dean needs five more points to reach 900 for her career. She is 105 points away from the magical 1000 point. Â
PLAYED LIKE THE REIGNING PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Over the past week,
Portia Adams averaged 20 points per game, which included a team-high 21 points in Saturday's loss. Adams has been in double-figures for the last seven games and is currently averaging 12.9 ppg, which puts her eighth in the conference.
HISTORY AGAINST THE COLONELS
LU suffered an overtime 80-74 loss to Nicholls in the Montagne Center on the 12th of January. Ironically, it was the second straight game in which the Cards lost to the Colonels in overtime. Despite this, LU maintains a 26-19 advantage over the Colonels.
SO LAMAR IS NO LONGER A TRIVIA ANSWER?
Nicholls stunned Houston Christian with 64-46 victory marking their second conference win of the season. The other victory came against LU in overtime on January 12th.
TWO-ON-ONE ANYONE?
Wednesday's game will pit three of the top 10 scorers in the conference as both
Sabria Dean (13.4 ppg; 6th) and
Akasha Davis (14.0 ppg; 3rd) will take on Lexi Alexander (13.9 ppg; 4th). Alexander was held to 11 ppg last week, but did post her sixth 20+ point game this year with 21 points against A&M-Commerce.
