BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University's women's basketball team suffered a setback with a heartbreaking loss in Natchitoches. But, they will have the opportunity to get back on track as they turn their attention to round two of this year's Battle of the Border with McNeese this Thursday night at 5:00 p.m. The game will be at the Legacy Center in Lake Charles, La.
A BALANCED ATTACK
LU is in the Southland Conference top five in both scoring (3rd; 61.8 ppg) and defending (4th;Â 60.4 ppg). Despite falling to the Demons, LU held them to 31.8% from the field, which was the second lowest field goal percentage total this season. Only Prairie View was held to 29.1%.
MUST BE 10 OR UNDER TO RIDE
In 11 games total, the Cardinals have held opponents to under 10 points in 13 different quarters. This included two games (Louisiana and Northwestern State) in which LU held the opposition to fewer than 10 twice during the same game. When LU holds an opponent to under 10 points, their record is 8-3.
LAST TIME AGAINST MCNEESE
Big Red converted 12 three's in an 82-61 win against McNeese.
Sabria Dean tallied 20 points while
Akasha Davis (16 points) and
Portia Adams (12 points) combined for 28 points. LU had three quarters in which they scored 20 or more points in the win.
DEM CARDS HAVE BEEN DIFFICULT TO CATCH
While LU is 39-43 against the Cowgirls lately, they have won the last 10 straight contests against McNeese dating back to Feb. 4, 2017, which will almost mark six years to the day the streak begin. The Cowgirls last defeated LU on March 11, 2016 in the SLC tournament.
SCOUTING THE COWGIRLS
At 8-12 overall and 5-4 in the Southland Conference, The Cowgirls are currently the top offensive team averaging 66.7 ppg, which is 1.3 points better than A&M-Commerce. But, they have given up nearly 70 ppg to opponents, which puts them at eighth in the conference.
TANKS FOR A DIVINE INTERVENTION
Although Divine Tanks has made 67 field goals, which puts her in 17th in the conference, her field goal percentage of 50.8% is second behind Davis, who has 54.8%. She led the Cowgirls with 12 points in their 78-61 loss to A&M-Corpus Christi.
