Cardinals Bound for Arlington To Meet the Mavericks

| By:

BEAUMONT, Texas - After opening the season with a convincing 74-point victory at home, Lamar University's women's basketball team makes their first road of the season as they will ride up I-45 to take on the University of Texas-Arlington Mavericks on Friday evening. The tip-off is scheduled to occur at 5:00 p.m.

I-108
The Cardinals enjoyed a 108-34 victory to open the 2023-24 season over Texas College. The 108 points actually ties for the 10th best scoring game by the Cardinals, which they share with the 1991 Cardinals' team that defeated UCF.

The Real AD
Akasha Davis sparked the victory with 24 points and came within one rebound of collecting a double-double. She shot 12-of-13 from the field throughout the contest.

Setting Up For a Homecoming
Taliah Hill was second in scoring for the Cardinals against Texas College putting up 13 points, including 7-of-8 from the free throw line. That was the first time the Arlington native reached double-figures in her career.

History Against the Mavericks
LU is 18-24 all-time against UTA. Last season, a cold fourth quarter prevented LU from picking up their sixth straight win against UTA, who wound up 60-56 winners.  Sabria Dean was the leading scorer with 20 points for the Cardinals.

Contrary to Popular Belief, Arlington Hasn't Been a Friendly Place
Arlington hasn't been kind to LU, who are 5-12 all-time when playing on the Mavericks' home court. While LU won the last two meetings against UTA in Arlington, from 2002-2009, Big Red lost six straight road contests prior to flipping the script.

Meet the Mavericks (Not the Dallas Mavericks)
The Mavericks opened the season in Tampa falling to South Florida 76-61. Avery Brittingham (16 points), Hannah Humphrey (12 points), and Taliyah Clark (10 points) combined for 38 points for UTA. The Mavericks brought in two members from other Western Athletic Conference programs to join the squad. Brittingham came from Stephen F. Austin where she was a First Team All-WAC player last season averaging 10.5 points per game and leading them in rebounding (8.5 rpg). Clark came from Seattle University where she was their leading scorer (10.8 ppg) and second in steals (33) and blocks (17).

Up Next
The Cardinals will head out west to Lubbock, Texas for a meeting with Texas Tech on Monday at 6:00 p.m.
