BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University men's golf team might have finished their fall season and will return to golfing in February, but head coach Jessie Mudd is already looking into bringing new faces to the squad. On signing day, LU have added two golfers from South Africa and Sweden in Luc Gavagnin and Filip Widepalm.
Luc Gavagnin - Broederstroom, North West, South Africa/Pecanwood CollegeÂ
Joining the Cardinals from South Africa, Gavagnin has acclaimed numerous achievements including six top-three finishes along with three firsts throughout his career at Pecanwood College. On two different occasions did he represent the North West U19 team and was ranked number four in the GolfRSA
Off the course, he was the Senior Sportsman of the Year last season and also earned academic honors as the top Economics student. He will plan to major in general business at LU.Â
Filip Widepalm - MoInlycke, Sweden/HulebaecksgymnasiestÂ
Another Swede coming to Beaumont, Widepalm will look to continue the tradition of successful Swedish golfers in Big Red colors. Throughout his high school career, Widepalm's average scores have been around 75.6 (freshman), 73.9 (sophomore), 74.6 (junior), and 73.6 (senior).Â
He also won three junior level tournaments and as a senior, qualified for the Nordic Golf League via Q-school. That same year, he was ranked ninth nationally in his age group. His intentions are to major in computer science while in Beaumont.Â
"We are excited to have both of these talented players joining us and looking forward to them being an integral part in continuing our level of great play," said Coach Mudd.
