Cardinals Claim Third at Border Olympics

LAREDO, Texas - Despite putting up their highest round of the tournament, the Cardinals' men's golf team still managed to finish third in the Border Olympics tournament. They finished with a three-round total of 870 strokes (288-287-295), and finished three strokes behind Louisiana Tech while finish three strokes ahead of 50th ranked Baylor.

"I'm proud of the guys this week," said head coach Jessie Mudd. "We got off to a slow start each round, showed some resilience and fought back.  It's a step on the right direction.  Looking to keep improving and gaining momentum throughout the spring."

Hellman finished third in the tournament as his 74 final round score added to the 68 and 70 for a final of 212 strokes. Guillermo Estivill finished with a 75 in the third round for a 220 total that tied him for 16th while Carl Hardin posted 221 strokes (72-72-77) in three rounds and was tied for 19th. Kevin Lee was tied for 25th after three round scores of 76, 72, and 75 helped get him 223 strokes.

Pedro Marin posted the best round of the day with 71 after he had 82 and 79 round totals on the previous day. This put him tied for 61st. As an individual Jacob Lindh shot 234 strokes (74-83-77) to get him tied for 70th.

Overall, the University of Houston claimed the title with a 15 stroke margin over LT. Both Andrew Gipson and Alexander Frances of UH each finished tied for first with 209 strokes.

LU will next compete in a three-day tournament on March 6-8 in Auburn, Ala.
