HOOPS CENTRAL: vs. McNeese

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's basketball program will play host to McNeese on Saturday in the second edition of the Battle of the Border at the Montagne Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (CT) and will be broadcasted on ESPN3.
 
The Cardinals (9-19, 5-14 Southland) are coming off a road loss to Stephen F. Austin, 70-50, with redshirt senior Amber Vidal notching 13 points coming off the bench. Through the season, the Cardinals are led by sophomore Angel Hastings, who leads the team with 12.8 points per game while senior Briana Laidler leads the defense with 7.9 rebounds per game and 1.5 blocks per game.
 
The Cowgirls (5-23, 2-17 Southland) fell to Nicholls, 72-53, on Wednesday. The Cowgirls are led by Damilola Balogun who averages 11.2 points per game and 10.5 rebounds per game.
 
This will mark the 80th meeting between the programs on the hardwood as the Cowgirls lead the series, 43-35, over the Cardinals. Last time out, Lamar captured the first edition of the Battle of the Border, 87-69, over McNeese.
 
RECAPPING OUR LAST GAME
  • The Lamar University women's basketball team suffered a tough loss to Stephen F. Austin on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals struggled to get things going offensively and ended up losing 70-50.
  • While it wasn't the best shooting performance by the Cards, they controlled the glass. The Cardinals pulled in 43 rebounds while their opponent only grabbed 34. Of the Cardinals' 43 rebounds, 19 of them were offensive.
  • A few bright spots for the Cardinals came from the performances by senior Amber Vidal and senior Briana Laidler. Vidal was the only Cardinal to score double figures on the day with 13 points, and she grabbed five rebounds for Big Red. Laidler was just one-point shy of a double-double. Laidler scored nine points and dominated the glass with 10 rebounds. 
 
LAST TIME WE MET
  • The Lamar University women's basketball program captured the win in the first edition of the Battle of the Border over McNeese, 87-69, backed by a career afternoon for freshman Malay McQueen, who put up a career-high 29 points.
  • Lamar took a 15-8 lead into the first media timeout on a wide-open three pointer by freshman Malay McQueen. McQueen finished the first quarter going 4-for-5 and picked up two steals along the way. Senior Briana Laidler picked up six first quarter points on 2-for-2 shooting. Lamar got out to a hot start in the first and took the lead into the second quarter, 27-20.
  • Coming out of the break, the Cardinals took the lead and never looked back as they went on the capture the first edition of the Battle of the Border, 87-69, over the Cowgirls. Lamar improves to 9-11 overall and 5-6 in the Southland, while McNeese falls to 5-15 overall and 2-9 in conference play.
