Women's Hoops Heads to Vegas for South Point Shootout

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's basketball program will travel to Las Vegas, Nev. to partake in the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout, hosted by the South Point Casino and Hotel, where they are scheduled to play San Diego State and Fresno State.

Lamar vs. San Diego State – Friday, November 27 at 5:45 p.m. CT – South Point Arena (Las Vegas, Nev.)

This will mark the first meeting of the programs on Friday. The Aztecs and Cards are two squads both looking to get a win. SDSU fell in the first game of the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout to Washington by a score of 61-59. Sophia Ramos leads
the Aztecs with 17 points a game along with grabbing an average of seven rebounds a game.

San Diego State is coached by Stacie Terry-Hutson, who is in her eighth year at the helm of the Aztecs. Terry-Hutson has posted an 87-128 overall record in her career but has helped turned around the Aztecs in conference play in each of the past
three years.

Lamar vs. Fresno State – Saturday, November 28 at 3:00 p.m. CT – South Point Arena (Las Vegas, Nev.)

As like SDSU, this will also mark the first meeting between LU and Fresno State. The Bulldogs have yet to tip off their 2020-21 season as the tournament marks their season openers. Fresno State was picked to finished first in the 2020-21 Mountain West Preseason Poll and were led by senior forward Maddi Utti being named Preseason Player of the Year.

Fresno State is coached by Jaime White, who is in her seventh year at FSU and 15th season overall. In her seven years in Fresno, White has posted a 124-72 record and led the Bulldogs to four postseason appearances and three appearances in the Mountain West Conference Championship.

RECAPPING OUR LAST GAME
  • The Lamar University women's basketball program got their 2020-21 season underway when they traveled to College Station, Texas to take on the No. 13 Texas A&M Aggies but fell in the contest, 77-61, at Reed Arena on Wednesday afternoon.\
  • The Cardinals fell down, 2-0, to begin the first quarter, but after senior Jadyn Pimentel scored the first bucket for the Cards of 2020-21 and a couple of big threes by junior Angel Hastings and freshman M'Kayla Malone, Lamar went on to hold the lead for the quarter, 20-17. LU shot 46 percent in the first frame, including going 3-for-5 from beyond the arc.
  • The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair as the Cards scored 22 points in the frame to the Aggies' 28 points. LU shot 43 percent in the frame compared to a 64 percent from Texas A&M. The Cardinals pulled within 10 points of the Aggie lead but could not reach the tie as Texas A&M went on to claim the third quarter and leading overall by a score of 64-49. Junior Anyssia Gibbs lead the way for the Cards in the third, tallying six points. Following Gibbs in scoring was junior Umaja Collins with four points.
  • For the Cardinals, multiple student-athletes made their Big Red debuts as junior Anyssia Gibbs, freshmen M'Kayla Malone and Bebe Galloway made their first appearances, as well as making their first career starts for the Cards. Redshirt junior Micaela Wilson and freshmen Sabria Dean and Dijone' Flowers made their Cardinal debuts on the hardwood as well.
