Box Score CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – An eerily similar situation to the 2018 regular season finale, the Lamar University men's tennis team needed a victory Wednesday against rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on the road to advance to the Southland Conference Championships next week. Unfortunately, for the Red and White that is where the similarities to last season ended as LU fell to the Islanders, 5-2.
The loss drops the Cardinals to 6-18 (.250) on the year and 1-4 (.200) in Southland matches. It also pushed LU into a four-way tie for fourth in the league standings, but the tiebreaker goes to Nicholls.
After losing the doubles points, the Cardinals battled back to get singles wins from sophomores
Nicolas Mayr and
Carlos Paton Canal on courts two and three. Mayr defeated the Islanders' Francois Kellerman in a three-setter to score the point. After dropping the opening set in a tiebreak, Mayr battled back to win 7-5 and 10-7 for the victory.
While Mayr went the distance for the point, Paton Canal didn't have to finish the opening set to score the team's second point. Leading 3-2 in the sixth game, Paton Canal got the point when A&M-Corpus Christi's Carlos Pedrosa Cuevas was forced to quit due to an injury.
Unfortunately for Big Red, they were unable to pick up a victory on the four remaining courts dropping the three-point decision.
