LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Southland Conference Individual Championships advanced to the finals round Sunday with senior, and No. 3 overall seed,
Leon Nickel in the hunt for the singles title. Nickel faced UT Rio Grande Valley's Santiago Serrano and the match played out exactly how a championship match should, going to a third set.
Nickel came out firing dominating Serrano to the tune of a 6-1 decision in the first set. Serrano would begin to settle down in the second and even the match up with a 6-2 victory to force a third. The third set was the closest of them all with neither player willing to give an inch. Unfortunately, Serrano was able to get a lead late and hold on for the 7-5 victory taking the match, 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.
The SLC Individual Championships wraps of the fall schedule for the Cardinals. The team will now turn its focus to the start of the spring season which will get under way in January.
