LAKE CHARLES, La. – It was a day of upsets at the Southland Conference Individual Championships Saturday afternoon, which was both good and bad for Lamar University. The day started with third-seeded
Leon Nickel advancing in singles but LU's top-seeded duo of Nickel and junior
Maxwell Lindstedt came up just short in their attempt to advance.
Nickel got the day started with an impressive victory over No. 2 seed Andres Delgadillo from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Nickel jumped out to an early lead over Delgadillo and never let up. Lamar's top singles' player recorded a 6-3 decision in the first set and their was no drop off in the switch to the second set. Nickel posted another 6-3 decision to advance to Sunday's final against No. 4-seed Santiago Serrano (UT Rio Grande Valley) who advanced after beating top-seeded Alejandro Hernandez (UIW) in straight sets. Sunday's championship match is set for a 10 a.m. start Sunday.
Unfortunately for the Red and White, Nickel's momentum did not extend to doubles. Nickel and Lindstedt dropped a tough super tiebreak decision to UIW's fourth-seeded duo of Hernandez and Alex Flores, 6-3, 3-6, 11-9.
