FORT WORTH, Texas – After a strong opening day at the ITA Texas Regional Thursday, Lamar University was going to be hard pressed to follow up with similar results on Friday's first day of doubles competition, but that is exactly what happened. The Cardinals posted three opening-round doubles wins from the five pairs in the bracket. The Cardinals have now recorded nine wins between singles and doubles opening-round matches.
Senior
Leon Nickel and junior
Maxwell Lindstedt got the winning started for LU. They disposed of UT Arlington's Novak Ivanovic and Christopher Bennett Wirahadipoernomo, 8-3 to advance to the second round. Unfortunately, the Cardinal duo was unable to get past UTA's Abel Forger and Mariano Dedura-Palomero in the next round falling 8-5.
Sophomores
Axel Bergh and
Rintaro Shukuda followed a similar path to that of Nickel and Lindstedt. Bergh and Shukuda were paired up against UT Rio Grande Valley's Aleksandar Hudjec and Tsz Him Chan, 8-6, to advance. That victory put them on a path to face TCU's Matthieu Chambonniere and Maximus Dussault but the Horned Frogs won the match 8-1.
The Cardinals final doubles win came from junior
Louis Drapeau and freshman
Dan Milburn. LU's duo jumped out to an early lead over Rice's Andrew Li and Joshua Mandelbaum and rode that lead to a victory, 8-4. Unfortunately, the Cardinals fell by the same score to Baylor's Henry Van Schalkwyk and Erik Schiessl.
Junior
Fabian Anthin was slated to hit the court Saturday for his third-round singles match, but scores had not been posted at press time.
