Cardinals Edged by New Orleans

Box Score NEW ORLEANS, La. – Lamar University had three match points against New Orleans but came up empty dropping a heartbreaking 4-3 decision at New Orleans Friday afternoon. The loss drops LU to 7-13 (.350) on the season and 4-6 (.400) in Southland Conference play.

"We struggled in doubles today, but we were able to put that behind us to start singles," said LU head coach David Wong. "We had some very strong performances in singles, and I don't want to take that away from our players, but we continue to struggle with unforced errors on some courts. That really hurt us at some key moments of the match.

"Even with the errors, we still had our chances to win but didn't get the job done. I give credit to New Orleans. They took advantage of the opportunities they were given. We now have to regroup and get ready for Nicholls on Sunday," added Wong.

The Privateers took the opening lead of the match by winning the doubles point with victories at Nos. 3 and 1 doubles, respectively. The struggles in doubles didn't seem to bother the Red and White as they stepped on the court to begin singles play. Sophomore Natalia Garcia Molina evened the match up with her straight-sets victory on court No. 5. Junior Sanja Jolic gave LU its first lead of the day with her victory on court No. 3 singles. For Jolic, it was her seventh consecutive singles win and ninth in the last 10 matches.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the run stopped at consecutive wins. The Privateers responded with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles to regain the one-point advantage. The losses on the top two courts were made even more uncomfortable as both Cardinals dropped tiebreakers.

Sophomore Amelie Vossgaetter set the stage for an exciting finish. Vossgaetter won a long three-set match by posting scores of 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, to send the outcome to court No. 6, which also went to a third set. The marathon match went to a tiebreak in the third before UNO picked up the victory.

Big Red returns to action Sunday when they make the short trip over to Thibodaux, La., to face Nicholls. The match will begin at 11 a.m. from the Nicholls Tennis Complex.
