Cardinals Drop First Tilt of Three-Match Road Swing

| By:
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Lamar University picked up an early doubles victory and got a strong performance in singles from Savannah Bijlsma but it wasn't enough to slow down Stephen F. Austin, falling to the Ladyjacks, 6-1, Monday afternoon at the Schlief Tennis Complex.

The Cardinals (9-9/2-6 SLC) found some early momentum at the No. 1 doubles position from the team of Asta Miettinen and Luana Paiva defeating SFA's Felicia Back and Sonja Rooth, 6-3. Unfortunately, the Cardinals were unable to secure any other doubles wins to go with it and entered singles competition down 1-0.

Bijlsma tried to cut into the Ladyjacks' lead in singles with a standout performance on court five. She dispensed of SFA's Avery Kinsey, 6-3, 6-3, but similar to doubles Lamar could not add any wins to go along with it as Big Red was slowed by injuries with court six being forced to retire in the second set.

The Cardinals will now look to right ship Wednesday when they travel to Natchitoches, La., to take on Northwestern State. The match against the Demons is set for an 11 a.m. start from the Jack Fisher Lady Demon Complex.
