Cardinals Prep for Nicholls, UIW

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University hits the road Sunday traveling to Thibodaux, La., for its second meeting against Nicholls – but its first in Southland Conference play – before returning home to host Incarnate Word Monday on Senior Day. The match against UIW was moved to the 15th from the original schedule.

The Cardinals (6-15/1-1 SLC) enter the weekend matchup in a two-way tie for third in the Southland standings with rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Big Red currently sits in one of the four spots for the Southland Conference tournament later this month in Corpus Christi. LU and the Islanders enter the weekend matches just a half game back of Incarnate Word and 1.5 games up on Nicholls who is trying to fight their way into a tournament position.

Big Red has dropped two straight entering the Sunday afternoon showdown in Thibodaux but faced Nicholls earlier this season in a non-conference matchup and recorded a 4-2 victory. Sunday's match will be a conference tilt.

The Colonels are the Southland's lone remaining team without a conference win this season. Nicholls is 5-14 (.263) on the year, but 0-3 in Southland play. Nicholls has lost seven of it past eight matches with the lone win during that stretch coming against Loyola-New Orleans (4-1). The Colonels are coming off a 4-3 setback to New Orleans. Sunday's match will begin at 1:30 p.m. from Colonel Tennis Complex.

Following the match against Nicholls, the Cardinals will return to Beaumont to face defending Southland Conference champion Incarnate Word Monday. The match against the league's other Cardinals will serve as senior day. UIW (10-5/2-1 SLC) is currently second in the Southland just 1.5 back of league leader Abilene Christian. San Antonio's version of the Cardinals suffered their first SLC loss of the season last time out against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. UIW will take on Abilene Christian in Abilene Friday before traveling to Beaumont.

The match against UIW will begin at 3 p.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center and will serve as Senior Day for the Red and White.
