BEAUMONT, Texas - Back in Texas after a narrow loss to the University of the Pacific and canceled matches against the University of Hawaii and Fresno State, Lamar University's men's tennis team will have a full schedule this weekend playing four matches in three days. The Cards will travel to Prairie View A&M for two matches on Friday and then return to Lamar for South Alabama on Sunday and Bucknell on Monday.
Lamar University traveled to Stockton, Calif., for what was supposed to be three matches in two days in the Mountain Pacific Invite but ended up being one very long match Saturday evening against tournament host Pacific.
The Cardinals dropped the contest, 4-3, in a match that was more than seven hours long.
Prairie View is 2-19 this season with two losses in a row, both at Louisiana-Lafayette. The Panthers two wins this year came against UT Tyler, 4-3, on Feb. 17 and against Mississippi Valley State, 5-1, on Feb. 24.
South Alabama holds an impressive 9-2 record thanks to a nine-match win streak. They lost only at Florida State, 5-2, and against UC-Santa Barbara, 4-1, before taking down Cal Poly, Xavier (La.), UAB, Samford, Belmont, Middle Tennessee, Florida Atlantic, Jackson State, and VCU. Lamar is the only SLC team on the schedule after a planned match against New Orleans on Feb. 26 was canceled.
Bucknell has lost two matches in a row and is 4-7 on the year with wins at Siena, against La Salle, at Saint Joseph's, and against Sacred Heart. The Bison lost matches to Wofford, North Carolina, Hofstra, Marist, UConn, Drexel, and Temple. Before playing against Lamar the Bison will also play the "other" Cardinals of the Southland Conference - Incarnate Word - on Sunday in San Antonio, Texas.
