BEAUMONT, Texas – For the first time since their fall tournament in October, the Lamar University men's tennis team will step on the court at the Thompson Family Tennis Center for a match. The Cardinals have opened the 2019 campaign with five consecutive matches away from Beaumont against some very tough competition.
The Cardinals (1-4/.200) open the season with tough road matches against New Mexico, Texas Tech and LSU and non-conference contests against New Orleans and Nicholls. After dropping their first four matches of the season the youthful Cardinals posted an impressive 4-2 victory over Nicholls at the LSU Invite in Baton Rouge.
Big Red enters the Sunday match looking for their second consecutive win of the season. The Cards' next opponent – UTSA – has jumped out to a quick start this posting a 4-1 (.800) record. After posting a doubleheader sweep over Prairie View A&M to start the season (by outscoring the Panthers, 12-1, in the two matches), the Roadrunners dropped a 6-1 decision at No. 8 Texas. UTSA has since rattled off consecutive victories over Southland Conference schools heading into Sunday's match.
Sunday's match is slated to begin at noon from the Thompson Family Tennis Center. It will be the first of a three-match homestand that will also see UT Rio Grande Valley and Southern Mississippi come to town. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the three-match stint comes before LU embarks on an eight-match road swing that will take them into the middle of March. During that time, the Cardinals will play matches in Arlington, Tulsa, College Station, Stockton, Calif., and Prairie View.
