Box Score TULSA, Okla. – Lamar University dropped a 4-1 decision at Oral Roberts, but the score doesn't indicate how close the match was. Five of the six singles matches were forced to a third set, and two doubles matches went to a tiebreaker.
"Oral Roberts played a good match today," said LU head coach
Scott Shankles. "We fell short in doubles but should've won being up 4-1 at line 1 and having won at No. 3. It's going to happen soon but we need to do a better job finishing off matches when it's there. Singles was a battle with five three set matches but it's the same as doubles and us not taking advantage of opportunities."
Big Red had its chances early to take the lead picking up a victory at No. 3 doubles and being up on court No. 1 but couldn't close out the match. ORU rallied for the victory at No. 1 doubles and closed out the point with a victory at line 2.
The Cardinals quickly tied the match back up at 1 early in singles play. The victory came from sophomore
Carlos Paton Canal at No. 3 singles. Paton Canal defeated ORU's Andre Russo with relative ease, 6-3, 6-0, to tie the match. The low-stress match would be the only one of its kind in singles.
In addition to Paton Canal's victory, LU also took the first set on two other courts –
Joshua Taylor at No. 4 and
Brock Lauer at 6. Unfortunately for the Red and White, ORU battled back on those courts forcing a third set. The good news for the Cardinals is they battled back on the other three courts where they lost the opening set to force a third.
The Golden Eagles reclaimed the lead at No. 6 singles as Eddy Leardini rallied from a 6-4 loss in the first set to Lauer, to post 6-4, 6-2, decisions in the final two sets. ORU closed the match with victories at No. 4 singles with Morcella Moreira battling back from an opening set loss to win at the No. 4 spot.
Freshman
Axel Vila Antuna took the early lead in the third set at No. 1 singles, but the match would be halted as the Golden Eagles ended the day with a victory at No. 2.
The Cardinals will take a day off before traveling to Texas A&M to face the Aggies Tuesday. The match against the Aggies will begin at noon.
