LU Unable to Get Offense Rolling at Arlington

Box Score PLANO, Texas – Lamar University got a doubles victory from newcomers Joshua Taylor and Axel Vila Antuna Friday morning but struggled to find offense on any of the other courts falling to UT Arlington, 7-0, Friday morning on the Lifetime Fitness Indoor Courts. The match was originally scheduled to be played on the UTA campus but had to be moved due to weather.

The LU duo picked up their victory in dominating fashion at line one doubles. The Cardinals top tandem defeated UTA's Guanarteme Nuez and Mauricio Rio, 6-4, for a promising start to the day.

"We got a big win at line one doubles and were up 40-15 in the ninth game on court three but couldn't convert and we lost our momentum," said LU head coach Scott Shankles. "UTA got some early leads in singles which led to a sweep. We were hanging tough with an experienced team.

"Our young guys are getting a good taste of high quality college tennis. We will keep learning from these experiences to help us by the time conference play rolls around," added Shankles.

Following the Cardinals' victory on court one, UTA rallied in the other two doubles matches to take the point. The Mavericks got out to the better start in singles play taking the first set on all six singles courts. Sophomore Nicolas Mayr tried to put a stop to UTA's first-set run but fell just short against Nuez at No. 2 singles, 7-5.

Big Red was unable to recover in the second set as the host team swept through the final six matches.

The Red and White will look to bounce Saturday when they travel to Tulsa, Okla., to face Valparaiso. The match against the Crusaders is slated to begin at noon.

"Valparaiso will be another tough test tomorrow," said Shankles. "I'm looking for us to start better against them."
