BEAUMONT, Texas – Wrapping up a busy home slate with a two-game weekend, Lamar University's women's soccer team returns to the pitch Friday against the Roadrunners of the University of Texas-San Antonio and will close its four-game homestand on Sunday with Colorado College.
THE LAST TIME OUT – LSU
Lamar University was unable to overcome two first-half goals falling to LSU, 3-0, Tuesday evening at the LU Soccer Complex. It was a game where the score was not indicative of how close the action was on the field. Â
Â
The Cardinals were outshot on the night but only by two, 13-11. The Red and White finished the night with one more save than the Tigers, 4-3.
Â
"I think anyone who watched this game would tell you it was closer than the 3-0 score would indicate," said LU head coachÂ
Steve Holeman. "LSU is a very direct team and they played a lot of balls in behind us. I thought we handled it well. We held our line well because they were offsides seven times in the first half but the one time they got in behind us they finished – good teams will do that.
Â
"We made a couple mistakes tonight and they capitalized on each one. That is what good teams do," added Holeman.
Lamar vs. UTSA - September 7 at 7 p.m.
Holding a 3-2 record on the year that includes a 1-0 mark at home and 2-2 away from San Antonio, UTSA has had a bit of an up and down season. The Roadrunners have wins over Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La., and over Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Okla., but also lost 4-0 at Colorado and 1-0 at Texas State. In its exhibition season UTSA played three Southland Conference teams and seemed to be neck-and-neck with the opposition, tying with Sam Houston and A&M-Corpus Christi and winning narrowly over HBU.
Â
Derek Pittman is in his first season with UTSA after stints at the University of Idaho and Arkansas State. He holds a 54-69-18 record in eight seasons as a head coach and has been coaching in collegiate soccer for 17 years.
