Sealy Scores as Cardinals Battle Rice to a 1-1 Tie

HOUSTON, Texas – Freshman Diem Sealy scored her first goal of the season to give Lamar University an early lead Sunday afternoon against Rice, but the Cardinals conceded a second-half goal, resulting in a 1-1 tie. The tie snaps a five-match losing streak to the Owls in the all-time history between the two teams.

Sealy's goal was one of three shots the Cardinals took throughout the match and Kamdyn Jalayer was credited with the assist. In her second start in goal, senior Keely Thomas recorded four saves while facing 12 shots.

The Owls had two early chances to score first, but one shot hit the crossbar (8th min.) while Thomas saved the other (15th). In the 19th minute, Jalayer delivered a long pass to Sealy, who broke for the goal. She crossed over Rice's goalkeeper, lost her balance, but still managed to get a foot on the ball and scored from the edge of the box.  Rice couldn't capitalize on a tying goal in the final second of the first half and the Cardinals led by one at halftime.

After a 52nd-minute save from Thomas to open the second half, the Owls found the back of the net six minutes later with a shot from near their sidelines that received a fortunate deflection off the goal post. While the Cardinals were unable to record a shot in the half, they would prevent Rice from scoring the game-winner in the 86th minute.

The Cardinals will conclude their three-game road trip by facing Tarleton State Sunday, Aug. 30th in Stephenville. The match will kick off at 5 p.m.
