BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University men's tennis team will step back on the court Tuesday to host Alcorn State in a doubleheader – a doubleheader which was originally scheduled to be played earlier this season but had to be postponed due to weather. The first match will get under way at 11 a.m. followed by the afternoon match beginning at 3. Both matches will be played at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
Despite a sub-.500 record, the Cardinals enter midweek match playing some of their best tennis of the season. Big Red has won consecutive matches posting victories over New Orleans and Alcorn State. The Cardinals outscored their previous two opponents by a combined score of 12-2.
A major reason for the Cardinals' improved play has been due to freshman Nicolas Mayr at the No. 5 singles position. Since being slotted fifth in the lineup, Mayr has posted a perfect 7-0 singles record.
The 2018 campaign has been equally tough on Prairie View. The Panthers enter the week with a 4-23 (.148) overall record, and have dropped eight straight. PVAMU has not won a match since posting a one-point decision over conference-foe Jackson State, 4-3, last month. The victory was the third of a season-long three match win streak for the Panthers. Prairie View has not won a non-conference match this season.
The doubleheader will be the Cardinals lone stop at home before returning to the road to face Incarnate Word and UTSA. San Antonio's version of the Cardinals (8-9/.471) enter the week as one of three remaining undefeated teams in the Southland Conference. UIW has won five of the previous seven matches and is coming off a 6-1 victory over New Orleans Monday afternoon. The match against the Southland's other Cardinals will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday in San Antonio.
LU will be back in action the following day to take on UTSA. The Roadrunners are 11-11 (.500) on the season, and have won three of their past five matches, but are coming off a three-point setback at Rice. The Roadrunners will host UT-Arlington before squaring off against the Cardinals.
The match against the UTSA will being at noon Sunday from the UTSA Tennis Center in San Antonio.
